Serves: makes 8oz

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) room temperature butter
  • 2 heaping tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 heaping teaspoons dried basil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • pinch of salt, to taste

Combine all ingredients together in a bowl and either whip together using a mixer, or mix by hand until everything is fully incorporated.

To wrap, place the butter in the center of a square of wax paper. Grasp the ends of the wax paper together at the top, and gently roll the butter back and forth until it forms a tube shape. Wrap the ends of the wax paper down around the butter and gently form it into a tighter tube, then tie off the ends with ribbon or pretty string.

Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or in the freezer for up to two months. Slice off and use as needed.

Need some ideas? Compound butters make great garlic bread bases. Or, drop a pat of melting butter atop a grilled steak. Sweeter versions can be spread on a toasted piece of baguette in the morning.

This would be pretty tasty on a hunk o steak or pork, or really any of the meats.

  • BUTTER. Hooray! Yeah, I am pretty done with cookies–to the point where we aren’t making any xmas coffeecakes or desserts of any kind. But then, isn’t that what the chocolate in the stockings is for? πŸ™‚

  • Yes, yes, 1,000 times yes! I’ve got a stocking full of Reese’s peanut butter trees with my name on it, and I think about them every day. Cookies are so two weeks ago.

  • I’ve been wanting to play around with butter compounds forever, but alas, have never gotten around to it. Time to do it. We got tons of snow in Ohio this year, way earlier than normal, but of course we had a heat wave this weekend so it’s all melted now. So now we’ll still have a freezing Christmas, just not a white one. :/

  • Two Red Bowls

Genius! Love this idea. I’m pretty cookie’d out myself — but is it even possible to ever be butter’ed out? I think not. Merry Christmas, Ruthy!

  • I never thought of giving compound butter as a gift, but why not? Brilliant idea! (And you’re right… I was cookie’d out long before Christmas this year.) Happy Holidays!
